Se Jun Park's amazing use of a Pachirisu in the Pokemon VGC World Championships was just too fun to watch. Not only was he using Pachirisu to paralyze and weaken opponents, but he played an impressive psychological game, baiting his opponents to address more immediate threats while Pachirisu interfered with their plans in a supporting role. Unlike the introduction into the competitive metagame of Rough Skin Garchomp, which is now the standard, I don't expect Pachirisu will be a common choice in competitive battling except with more technical players, but it's still fun to see a demonstration of why even seemingly weaker pokemon can still perform well.
(Now that I'm finally no longer busy and have good internet, I'll be posting a finalized Ko legendary design soon. Sorry it's taken me so long, it seems like something always causes problems with these things)

Things like smogon are what have ruined the gameplay with all their rules and tiers.

This guy demonstrated how you can SOMEHOW use your favorite pokemon against all the OU.
edit;

I know how tiers work guys, I know they test everything and
there's something for everyone. And VGC is a totally different thing.
I guess I've just grown up old and bitter because people
with cookie-cutter teams beat my ass. /sad
Nyveni @ Tuesday, August 19th 2014, 4:40 PM

I think the rules/tiers smogon sets up are meant in good faith, with the intention of creating a more enjoyable way of playing where you don't always have to worry about the super god-monsters. It's just that the mentality of ranking everything leaks into general play, so it's nice to see something like this shake things up.
Edit: It's nice to see discussion of the state of competitive battling, thank you all for taking the time to comment and share your thoughts.
And nami, to elaborate a bit, the idea of tiers is that you can actually use your favorite pokemon in an environment where it can be effectively and enjoyably used. For example, luvdisc lacks the stats or moves to stand up to garchomp or tyranitar, and the tiers are a way to have it on your team without its stats inevitably putting it at a massive disadvantage. You can use it in higher tiers if you want, but unless it can work well with your team (like Pachirisu's volt absorb + follow me + nuzzle paired with gyarados' intimidate) it will be harder to have an enjoyable experience when you're constantly losing to the Behemoth Of The Week. I personally like tiers because they allow me to not worry about Mega Gengar or Mega Kangashkhan, two pokemon that would require a dedicated plan to counter. My only problem with tiers and rules is that they can lead to a mentality where some pokemon are thought of as inherently better or where the recommended moveset is the only way to use a pokemon, and Se Jun's victory will help to dispel that view.
Psidra @ Tuesday, August 19th 2014, 4:57 PM

Smogon's rules and tiers aren't for VGC.
SailorClef @ Tuesday, August 19th 2014, 5:52 PM
avatar
There were some VGC players already using Pachirisu before Sejun, they just fell short of qualifying for worlds. Don't get me wrong, Sejun is a great player and deserved to win, but he did NOT use Pachirisu because it was his "favorite pokemon" or because he liked it any more than any other Pokemon. It was the best fit for his team in a metagame where follow me users are very limited and rage powder is commonly countered with safety goggles.

Also yes, Smogon OU has absolutely nothing to do with VGC rules at all.

(I have played in worlds in previous years and know most of the competitors personally)

I think that often times the people who don't do much competitive play really rag on smogon a lot. If you don't know how their systems work then it can seem like they are just banning anything that is good but that isn't the case. The have people who play in the metagame and participate in the suspect tests vote on whether a pokemon should stay in its current tier or be sent up. The decisions are made by the people who are going to be affected by it, and care enough to participate, and I think it is a great system. Pokemon are not defined by their tiers but it is great to take a pokemon that may not be as good as the rest, and play it effectively in a lower tier match. Smogon also has their recommended movesets and strategies that I find to be really useful. I can play around with those, and add my own tweaks based on how I play and how my team works, and learn what works best for me. Pachi worked because of the synergy it had with Se Jun's team and the way it supported the rest of his pokemon, not because pachirisu would be good on any team, or in anyone elses hands. It is all about the player, what pokemon they decide to use, and how they use them.

(Uploading because I accidentally drew it on the wrong board =/)

My initial reaction to the new contest outfits was, in less polite terms, that they should be reversed. But then again, I just really like crossdressing. A lot. A lot.

The bg is loosely based on this because I didn't have the energy for a proper one.

Eugh. I'm not sure whether I'd want to play as Brendan or May D: I hope the outfits can be customised

I think the new May is disgusting. But I guess I'll just deal with it instead of playing as a boy. :/
febreze @ Monday, August 18th 2014, 4:04 PM
avatar
I think the new costumes are cute, but they are way too gender stereotypical. The guy gets the cool, spiky, red and black outfit while the girl gets the cute, frilly, pink and white outfit.

This is super cute! I love May's expression.
nya_chan @ Monday, August 18th 2014, 9:49 PM

To be honest, my biggest problem with Pokemon games at this point is that the girl always gets the pink stuff. The pokegear, the poketch (I still don't know how to pronounce that), the clothes, etc... all pink. And while there are certainly plenty of girls in the world who like pink, there are plenty of other who don't. Or who would at least like to have an option other than pink all the time. I'm in the "doesn't really like pink at all" camp (despite my favorite Pokemon being a pink cat...), so I just kind of sighed when I saw the contest outfits. And then this image popped into my head.

@Psidra: I'm... not sure I fully agree. It seems like a sweeping judgement to say that all younger female characters are just sex objects. I won't deny that some outfits are sexualized (though Cynthia's lack of cleavage in her official art has always baffled me), especially those that got redesigns. They're all conventionally attractive, which is its own problem, but I don't think that's quite the same thing.
Nyveni @ Tuesday, August 19th 2014, 5:18 AM
avatar
I felt the same way. It's always pink and bows and short short/skirts for the girls. And Psidra, the character art looked okay at first but I started noticing that everything was all off. No gloves, no jacket, no bandana, the face was different... Is that what you mean?
Superneko @ Tuesday, August 19th 2014, 7:10 AM
avatar
I don't like Hoenn anyways??? but the coordinator outfits are so cute.
I'm hoping for crossdressing too cause I usually play the male protag,,

Your picture is so lovely tho!!
The lineless style you used is nice *V*
Psidra @ Tuesday, August 19th 2014, 6:37 PM
avatar
@ Nyveni
I mean this time around, they sexualized May a lot more.

@ nya_chan
My biggest problem with the games is that female characters only exist to be sexual objects for male players. And before someone brings up Agatha and Bertha, let me point out that there are way fewer "unattractive" or older women than men in the games. (I can only think of Agatha and Bertha as examples right now even. Drasna is a little older, but not drawn as your usual comical old woman archetype.)

There are basically no female characters that have dignity. After they made Sabrina "cute" and a movie star, I think I'm only left with Drasna to like as a female character.

EDIT
This isn't a problem unique to the Pokemon video game series by any means, of course.
eroshiyda @ Tuesday, August 19th 2014, 11:04 PM
avatar
I actually like the background. =) I agree that the clothes in these so-called children's games should be more gender-neutral and appropriate. I was sad that they didn't let me buy boy jeans at any of the Kalos stores. =/ They were cuter than the skin-tight atrocities for girls.

Eeeeeee it's so pretty! I'm really liking all these pretty or elegant megas, like Altaria and Banette. I think I prefer the pretty ones to the big tough scary ones. Most of the 'tough' mega evos are being applied to pokemon that are already very tough looking, and I think adding spikes to Tyranitar or a huge chin to Garchomp just makes them look silly, while the more pretty or elegant mega forms like this one make the pokemon fancier.
